»Most of the arguments you have are with your dad.
But the mothers are not exactly innocent there.
Either they prefer to send the fathers than to take
on the confrontation themselves.«

Excerpt:

When I was chucked out of the flat I was sharing with a few others, my grandparents immediately offered to let me stay with them for a while. That suited me pretty well, because I’d always got on better with them than with my parents.

I suppose my grandparents aren’t under the same kind of pressure as my parents are. They can take things much more easily. And they go about tackling problems in a different way to my parents. First of all, my grandparents listen carefully and let me explain everything to them. That way, they can form a sensible opinion. And they’re more open-minded somehow.

Me and my parents always end up having fights. They never want to know exactly what happened. For example, they’ve often said to me: You can tell us everything, even if you try pot or something. But then once I came home stoned and when they asked me if I’d been smoking pot, I said, Yes! They flipped out completely. They made an incredible song and dance about it. So then I yelled at them too and told them to take it easy. You told me I should tell you everything, I said.

I can’t remember when I last talked properly to my parents – it must be a fair few years ago now. I just didn’t want to any more, because, really, my parents only seem to notice when I fuck up. ...
